MLB 2009-2010: Off Season

Might as well start a new thread that I can use to whine and cry... Theo is already saying the Red Sox are on a plan for 2012, which is short for - we are not going to beat the Yankees this year. We are going to be better than 98% of baseball teams, but we are going to SUCK. Yup, SUCK. If we can't beat the Yankees, we might as well be the Royals. There is just know way the Sox ownership will spend anything near what the Yankees are spending. From early predictions, they will have well over double our payroll and we will have one of the top 5 payrolls in the league (baring any blockbuster free agent signings.) Until there is a restructuring, or salary cap, we might as well quit... First Polanco, then Granderson, with Inge to the Cardinals in the imminent future, and Ordonez and Cabrera on the possibility block...I might as well become a Red Sox fan.

Fully giving in to the reality that the Yankees are going to win no matter what. Might as well deeply cut payroll. To be honest...the Red Sox might pick up another of your coveted players on a side deal, if he is sober enough to pass the physical. Yup, we are vultures at this point... The reason we can still spend is because of NESN and a full house every night with the highest ticket prices in baseball.

Even though i'm a die hard Angel fan.. i can recognize that the Yanks are just gonna win again, they'll be just as good maybe better.

The discrepancy. Last year it was $80 million. As it looks, the Yankees will probably double the next team (Mets) although maybe the Mets will spend some money to compete. The Red Sox are making it clear they are out of the arms race... So if the Red Sox could afford to buy another $110 million in players next year, would they be better? Basically that is just like asking if the Red Sox would like the highest paid 7 players in baseball to ADD to their lineup... ******* ridiculous... I am the biggest fan in the world and I just might stop watching. The game is no longer competitive and I am a fan of a team that is "competitive!" Not to mention the Red Sox are a small market team. Boston only has 620,000 people and it is 21st overall in the US as far as size... Not like we have 12 Million people...sheesh.. [B]Edit:[/B] Just to be clear, Boston has roughly the same population as El Paso, Texas and they don't even have a pro wiffle ball team...

Sorry for my previous ranting...[/QUOTE] Yes!! Im very happy about this deal. Lowell will make a very nice dh in Texas, and the red sox are paying for 9 million of his 12 million dollar contract. Ramirez might turn out to be a decent player, but who knows. The rangers also signed Rich Harden to a one year deal, when he is healthy he is a good pitcher. Hopefully he can stay healthy. And to top it off the rangers traded Kevin Millwood to the Orioles for reliver Chris Ray. I dont know much about Ray but im glad Millwood is gone.

Who happens to be residing in Seattle at the current moment.....

Sure, it would be an improvement on D, but Beltre's best years are half a decade behind him... I want Youk to third and Mr. Adrian Gonzalez. Theo, pay them their random and get us our big gun! i was giddy as a a kid on a candy store when the Empire Stroke Back (...yes, im a yankee die hard since the womb, blame my father..).. but the reality is that the Yankees had had the highest payroll the last 4 or 5 seasons at least, and only 1 championship to show for it, so dont you all give up so early.. or maybe do give in, i would welcome a new three-peat. >= )

After this weeks events, EVERY position player on their team makes more than $12 million dollars and they have a quarter billion sunk into pitching! ...and they are not even done spending. Like I mentioned above, the Yankees are on a clear path to DOUBLE the Red Sox payroll this year. Baseball is in a very sad place right now.

I don't know why they're getting rid of all of their franchise players. I mean, I kind of do. They want Halladay. But who doesn't? And wouldn't you rather play for a team that actually has franchise players around you to support you? No way they are getting him.

He has a no trade clause and with them dumping franchise players, there is no way he would go there. If he was a free agent, he'd already be on the Yankees (just about everyone's first choice) but being to get him will require unloading the farm, a few other teams have a chance. I can't believe you are complaining. Didn't the Red Sox just won one in 2007. Try being a Blue Jays fan like I'm. Since we won the 2 world Series we have been not good and dealing with the J.P. richardi era was painful. This is just a folly though that comes with baseball and every team just gets over spent by the Yankees. Here's hoping the Jays get something for Halladay and don't trade him within their division i.e. Yankees or for that matter Red Sox.

While I really wish that we could bring him back, I agree with Theo's logic on this one. Do we really want to pay Bay $20 million in 2015 when he is 36? Sure, we'll get a few good years out of him, but I am guessing by then he'll just be a payroll problem (ala Lowell, Ortiz, Drew.) He's not THAT good. Actually, kind of boring if you ask me... This is his last big contract, and he wants 5 years. The Sox just can't afford to make that investment over the long term.
