The guy has lost it. Forget the past. Right now he is a middle of the road, injury prone shortstop and in 6 years he will be lucky to even be playing...
On another note, I'm still really sad about loosing VMart. :(

While at first I was disappointed, I now agree with the "consensus" logic that in two years he will be a first baseman/DH and for that money you sure as heck better get someone that can approach 30 HR a year.
Honestly, I'd be fine with Salty/Tek doing the catching (if they can get Tek for cheap.) I think Saltalamacchia is going to shine, I just have a feeling. He was an elite prospect and that is all still there. With the Sox system and Sox coaching, he will not only meet expectations, but far exceed them.
Not to mention Sox management thinks Ryan Lavarnway is the future and we are just "bridging" the gap.
So yes, it was sad to lose VMart, but that just means we now have $40 million to spend on a handful of players this off-season! Shopping! I love shopping! Well, the free agent kind...
That's true, I forgot we had Salty! I like him a lot too and I think he will do well in Boston.
I've been bad at keeping up with the off season this year. I don't think Tek will come back though. Either he won't be cheap enough or he will just retire.

a handful of players, or a certain New York Yankees shortstop who isn't going to be "drinking reality potion" anytime soon. How crazy would that be?

While it would be great for the "rub it in the Yankees' face" appeal, I'm not sure how sound an investment it would be. Of course, if we could grab him as a flier for a couple years (part of his contact saying he would go to the Hall of Fame wearing a Red Sox cap, muahahaha) then it might just be worth it!
Baseball Prospectus' Pecota projection system said last year (before the worst season of his career) that he would be worth $22.5 million over three years, or $7.5 a year for his upcoming contract.
So...what the Yankees offered him is more than fair, although being he is their "mascot" I suspect when all is said and done they will end up paying much more than his real value and he'll retire a Yankee.

I agree with you, when it is all said and done they will pay A-rod-like money for Marco Scutaro-like production. Jeter is a good leader and is the face of the franchise, but he has no glove, and his batting skills have definitely fallen off. There is no way they can hit him lead off, or even towards the top of the order next year if they want to compete in the AL.
Red Sox sign Varitek for one year
Great news. I think Tek should play this last season and retire with the Sox.
Oh and make sure to ignore this part...
There are two ways to look at his. Saltalamacchia and Varitek combined to play 51 major league games last season. They had a .221 batting average, seven home runs and 18 RBIs.
Those are your catchers. Yikes.
Adrian Gonzalez is one of the most underrated players in the majors. If the trade goes through, that was a great move for the Sox.

Agreed. You just have to look at his splits to realize that his biggest enemy has always been Petco Park.
In 2010 he batted .279 home with 11 HRs and .315 with 20 HRs on the road.
In 2009 he batted .244 home with 12 HRs and .306 with 28 HRs on the road.
Fenway is going to be a launching pad for this guy (along with other batter friendly AL Parks) and if healthy he will easily bat .300 with 40HRs and 120 RBIs (while having a sick OPS.)
Not to mention, he is one of the best fielding first basemen in the game.
So now we just need to get the ink dry on a deal so we can get back to courting Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth. :D

If the BoSox sign Crawford, their team will absolutely destroy any records dealing with steals. What do you think their lineup would be next year with Crawford and Gonzo?

As insignificant as that would be it's probably not realistic. The record is 341.

Honestly, I don't think Crawford is a good fit unless they were to trade Ellsbury for a relief pitcher.
The main issue is that the order would be top loaded with lefties which would make the team vulnerable to good lefthanded pitching (which the Yankees have.) Also, Crawford doesn't want to bat leadoff.
I think Werth is a much better fit, batting after Ortiz...
1. Ellsbury L
2. Pedroia R
3. Gonzalez L
4. Youklis R
5. Ortiz L
6. Werth R
7. Drew L
8. Salty R /Tek B
9. Lowrie B /Scutaro R
Or we can stick with Mike Cameron in center and grab Cliff Lee. :wink2:
I've refreshed boston.com a thousand times today and still no word of a deal with only 45 minutes left on the clock. Come on Theo, back up the Brinks truck and get this done...
So much for Jayson Werth going to the red sox. Just signed a 7 year deal with the nationals.
Oh ya, when it goes bad in Red Sox nation you best run for cover.
Sunday, bloody Sunday, for Red Sox: First Gonzalez, now Werth
That said, I still think there is an outside chance the Red Sox can move on Gonzo before he becomes a free agent. The Yankees already have a first baseman and there are not many other teams out there willing to go 8/for $180,000,000 - which is what he supposedly wants...
In the land of the Red Sox, it is historically the job of the front office to torture the fans before giving them a present. :D

Tell us how you really feel.
So much for Jayson Werth going to the red sox.
After looking at the hard numbers this morning, I'm very happy he did not.
The guy has DL Drew career numbers and will be putting up pine riding, utility player stats by 2017, making $18 million a year at age 38. This will in a short time join the list of worst contracts in baseball. A payroll anchor for years to come...
The most disturbing part about this ridiculous contract, is it raises the bidding on everyone else.
[Crawford] is looking at maybe eight years, $180 million now, maybe 10 years, $190 million.
You might as well count the Red Sox out of that one right now. If they are going to squirm when it comes to AGon at 8/$167 - there is no way in **** they are going to give Crawford 10 years, or even 8 at that number.
Werthless isn't looking for another championship.
He just went for the biggest payout.
You cant really blame him for taking the money. He is 31 and this was his last/best chance to get a huge contract and he did. I was suprised he signed with the Nationals but they paid him what he wanted.

I really don't blame him. I might just be a little bitter right now lol.
I was shocked the nationals offered that. It was stupid on their part.

It was very dumb on the nationals part, he is a good player but not worth 126 million. They had to try something to keep their fans coming to the games since Strasburg is going to miss the entire season and Bryce Harper will not be in the majors to begin next season.
It was stupid on their part.
Well, they are just the re-branded Expos, what did you expect? lol.
Fangraphs does a breakdown and they say the deal isn't as bad as it looks on the surface (although still bad.)
I guess the Phillies offered him $48 million (3 years) and the Red Sox never made a formal offer (as Werth was looking for what most GM's thought was pie in the sky.)
I'd personally have trouble putting Werth in the top 15 OFs in baseball so no matter what math Fangraphs used, it seems flawed being the fact that I think Dunn was overpaid as well.
Now giving that type of money (or more) to AGon is a different story.
