Taking away the theme is one of the very few things they got right on the "new era" of Survivor. Not only are themes restrictive but it makes them force an annoying and often fake narrative. So then you have the corny ones like Josh, Nelson, Devin, and Tori feeding into the theme extra hard cause they know it gets airtime even though it's awful tv. Everything about themes is terrible. Come up with a good cast and an interesting format and it's not necessary. But production is too ignorant and incompetent.
the challenge seems to be in that phase that survivor used to be in, where they thought each of their seasons needed a theme for the audience to be engaged. what they really need to do is scale it back and focus on interesting and compelling casting
