Grey's has returned (for real) and with a bang! Sure last week was a cute episode about "the contest" and we were brought back into the word of Seattle Grace after months of strike induced waiting, but it had nothing on the buzz generating epic ballet that played out last night. I think that this will go down as one of my all time favorites, at least from the meager pickings post season 2. Everything about the episode was done with style and flair that hearkened back to the good old days.
We enter and exit with Addision (whom I love) and she provided effortless comic relief and gave us a chance to quickly reflect on the happenings since her departure as she catches up through interactions with the other doctors. Her talking to Meredith and Derek like they were still a couple was priceless. We know that they are no longer, but the underpinning of the story is that they secretly want to be and that made it all the better. Sure, I am a professed "Mer hater" - but I see the writing on the wall and actually enjoyed her role in the drama last night. Meredith offers a level of intelligence and self depreciating humor that drives the show, and I just need to accept that.
George made an astounding recovery from his Callie love spiral and was funny as ****. He was back to being the George I love and even though poor Izzy was the butt of the jokes (as usual) she would find redemption in the end. I loved Shonda's attempt to inject another catch phrase into the lexicon - Coded. I know in a week instead of someone saying, "Gee Bacchus, I totally disagree with you" we will be hearing, "Bac - Ya Coooooded!"
Izzy scenes with the couple that wanted an abortion were some of the most touching moments this season (although Baileys confessions to Addison were equally heart wrenching.) I was so happy to see Izzy take a stand and fall back to her training to make a difference. Her assertiveness is what I have been wanting to see for a long time. Also, the fact that a woman with AIDS could give birth with a 98% chance of not passing on the disease was educating to say the least. All objectives were met in that sequence and the writing superb. We need to see more of this Izzy and I think that we will.
With Rebecca's return, I immediately saw trouble. Low and behold she was pregnant and Alex handled it in a 100% predictable manner. I knew that he would be a complete and total *******, and he was. The good news is that we end the show with him rubbing her belly and the experience of saving the baby in the OR seems to have made him have a change of heart. The bad news is of course the fact that she isn't pregnant! Whoops!
Yes, the ending this week was intense! It all started in the elevator with the parade of Derek lovers current and former and built into Joe's where we find out Hahn likes Callie more then we thought, Callie likes ***** more then we thought (heading off for hot *** with Sloan) and Addison values Derek more then we thought - telling Mer she better smarten up and head back to McDisney World.
All in all a classic Grey's Anatomy episode that reminded me of why I love this show.
Grey's Quote of the night:
Callie: Did anyone ever think you two were a couple?
Meredith: No, because we screw boys like ****** on tequila.
Cristina: Then we either try to marry them or drown ourselves.
Callie: Huh.
