That's what happened to Cancun last summer - bumped up about 40% in week 2.
B2NO is off about 10% from Cancun, which premiered June 24, and about 70% from Austin, which premiered June 21.
I'm pretty sure I could show a strong statistical correlation between the show moving to 1 hour and the ratings plummeting.
I remember though Austin had a butt load of good promos though that were running all through the month of June and end of mid May. I guess they had money to do that back then because thats when real world was in its prime with popularity among the 12-24 demographic. What about Paris and Sydney? those premiered in the summer I think Paris premiered in May of 2003 and Sydney in August of 2007.

Don't have a clue on Paris. Sydney was very close to Austin. Don't have specifics for them, it was a long time ago and I don't feel like paying Nielson for the sake of a forum post ;).
Why don't they have those casting specials anymore where they had the old Real World people come back and introduce the new cast? Or have them comment on how they think the seasons going to go? I always thought that was funny and made me want to watch it.
P.S. I will train you guys eventually to talk about ratings in terms of A18-49 numbers instead of total viewers - B2NO got a .6, not 1.2 million or a .9 (which would be its traditional rating) ;)
Then you would be undoing all the "training" I started her a long time ago... :victory:
The 18 - 49 demo is one MTV has never talked about in recent years -- neither in the PR stuff or in their marketing to advertisers. The only place they have had any traction in recent years is in 13-24, where the money has really dried up since the beginning of the recession.
The only thing saving MTV's execs from the axe is that VH-1, fueled by thier post Megan Wants a Millionaire/I Love Money disaster, has been in greater freefall.
Nice to have someone else here who does understand ratings, though!

So here's my question to the experts on here, like any other business, ratings/numbers always come out at end of business day or the next morning, the decline in mtv's numbers have been going down the slope for a while now. So why hasn't mtv DONE something to boost their ratings? They keep doing these Challenges and Real World's with receiving little in return. To keep talking numbers is futile to me, IMO, they need to stop watching their numbers slip down the slope hoping kiddies will get into again and actually get off their arces and promote the shows, get interactive the viewers..SOMETHING!

Its a mixed bag for MTV. I read the same releases you do, and MTV loves to talk about P12-24, W12-24, W12-34, and A18-34, but that's because that's where they're kicking ***. Last I checked they were still number one full day in the first 2, and top five in the other.
When MTV comes to certain advertisers, they can sell on P12-24 for things like Axe, Tag, Kotex, certain movies, and Trident Layers.
But if they're going to Sprint, Dr. Pepper, Subway, Ford, or certain other movies with P12-24 (all of whom advertised on B2NO this week), they're gonna be laughed at. There was a Toyota ad during this week's episode focusing on vehicle safety. Either someone at Toyota needs to be fired or they sold ad that based on A18-49.
So if we had access to P12-24, I would probably tout them as nearly or even equally as important for MTV, but unfortunately all we get is A18-49, W18-49, HH and Total Viewers, so from what we have, I feel theres nothing I can do but promo A18-49. I agree that its good to find someone else with a handle on this stuff!
Glossary for non-ratings nerds: A=Adults P=People W=Females (women).

Hopefully ending "The Hills" will be part of a new direction for the network. Part of TRW's problem with ratings IMO has to do with the overall decline of all programming on the network especially between 4pm and 8pm. If they had better shows on during those hours they might recapture lost audience members for their later shows--reeling the fish in so to speak. I have trouble with them not seemingly having a regular broadcast schedule during those hours from day to day and I just keep going past them when I see anything having to do with 16 and pregnant or Made (or Jersey Shore but that is usually post 8pm).
Number 8 on the top 10 world wide twitter trending topics.....hopefully translate to at least decent ratings. Wishful thinking...HIGH ratings (please 2 million).

You do realize that about half of the tweets I saw with the #realworld tag actually had nothing to do with the show, right?

Yeah...I don't see ratings going anywhere but down.
You do realize that about half of the tweets I saw with the #realworld tag actually had nothing to do with the show, right?
Really? The majority I'm getting is about the show, but it's probably selective attention from my part. Some of the tweets are sad. For example, "I didn't know the Real World was still on."
Yeah...I don't see ratings going anywhere but down.
They'll be up if they follow the 2009 pattern, if not this week then next. I expect week 2, 3, or 4 to be the season high unless this season catches fire for some reason. I thought MTV did a good job of replaying the premiere this week.
I predict a .8 A18-49 /.9 HH / 1.49 million week. Tough to predict with the 4th causing many to vacation this week but that's my guess.
Well they aren't re-running this second episode much (only 5 times) mainly because The Hills ends next week for good and they are runnning pretty much every episode of that the whole weekend. I'm hoping since they are re-running episodes more than DC that they will do better in the ratings :)

Episode 2 Ratings
Real World: Back to New Orleans (10pm)
- 1.692 million viewers
- 1.2/2 HH
- 1.0/3 A18-49
- 1.7/6 W18-34
Massive win for BMP and MTV. I expect improvement again next week. Could make the top ten for 18-34 or 18-49 depending on how they count the Nascar race (last week the race counted three times).

Ok, not bad. Then again, it was only episode 2, and imo and from most of the tweets and fb posts i saw, the episode was a snooooooozer. We'll see if they can keep it up.

Very impressive. Especially considering how it against for the heavily advertised premiere.

Wow that's pretty good!
Just went back and looked at MTVs 10PM ratings this week. The Hills Tuesday did about 15% better than RW, but RW beat The City Tues @10:30, crushed RJ Berger Mon @ 10, and demolished Warren the Ape Mon @ 10:30 (which had a 0.1 in the key demo). So even though renewal has looked shaky, with this as the internal competition (and the Hills ending), things may be looking up.
Anyone else thinking that Jersey Shore will help the show tremendously?
@CastaStone How Is jersey Shore going to help it ?
Im glad the ratings are going up though , and Yes i think Ryan is boosting up the Ratings.
1) Brings more viewers to MTV, where they see the promos for other shows.
2) Puts MTV back into viewers "remote finger memory"; its been proven that when you're randomly channel surfing, you hit the numbers of the channels you've recently watched first.
Episode 3 will be re-aired a total of 11 times this week. And this weeks episode was really good. I think we can expect ratings to continue to improve.
I don't think ratings will be that high this week, because of the ESPY awards.
Ratings might not be high this week, but it would have little to do with the ESPY Awards, which doesn't really pull big numbers to start with and attracts an entirely different audience.
Honestly, I didn't even know it was on last night...
I don't think ratings will be that high this week, because of the ESPY awards.
I'm betting that the ESPYs won't even be the highest rated cable broadcast of the night; Hot in Cleveland will have the most viewers and either Top Chef or more likely Tosh.0 will have the best rating in the Demo. Remember that the ESPYs are up against literally no other sports programming at all, so they'll draw serious sports fan, but I doubt they draw much else; last year the show did a 0.9 in the Demo, RW should beat that.
My prediction for B2NO:
1.77 million viewers || 1.3/2 HH || 1.1/3 A18-49 || 1.8/6 W18-34.
It was rainy on the East Coast last night, which should help.
P.S. the 11 reairs means that the first weeks reruns (which numbers aren't made public for) did awesome. That matters when it comes to renewal. It matters a lot.
