While I don't think Dunbar, Vinny, and Johnny are the best male players, it's possible that the "captains" thought they were--Dunbar certainly appears to be like Evan or CT. However, I think the point of having the weakest people pick was to mix it up. I think it's ridiculous too, but it gave them some amount of power. Not that it mattered when it came to voting for the Gulag.
As for picking weak people--yeah, that works if you don't want to go home--and that's not even a sure thing, since you kind of proved yourself to be one of the weakest in order to be a captain, and the team can vote you in regardless. It also doesn't work so well if you want to actually win some money.
:laugh2:
Sorry...but it's been said that Camila only picked Dunbar because she thought he was cute. Only logical first pick was Johnny, and even then I wouldn't have taken him over Abram, Derrick, and Brad.
What I thought was weird was that Brandon was the third to last male picked. He's an athletic guy and I don't know why some people got picked over him (Derek, Chet, Tyler, Luke).
Going back and watching the picking of the teams imo i feel like the Red team made some mistakes.
1.They could of had Abe or Derrick over Brad (I get why Brad was picked becuase of Tori)
2.They could of had Dan or Ty over Tyler
3.Cara Maria could of been picked over Mandi
4.Luke over Chet

Agree with the first three, but I think Chet has more in him than Luke.

They could have had Abram and Derrick, if they picked Abe first and picked derrick after gray team chose vinny and blue chose johnny.

That would've been a great red team. Camila definitely shouldn't have picked with her...eyes, silly girl.
I don't think it's very shocking that Cara Maria wasn't picked early on (or over Mandi). Yes, she did well in her physical abilities test on FM2, but she only was there one episode, so people didn't get to see how she did at missions much, and people not on that challenge may not have seen her before because of that. Mandi was there longer.
Tyler was one of the first people to complete the race (over Dan and Ty), so he looked good.

I get what they're saying though, because although Cara Maria went home first in FM2, in all the physical tests against those girls, she won. In the trial challenges against them on FM2, she was proven to be better than them all. I thought at least, she'd be chosen in the middle, but I guess you really never know.

I don't think those are mistakes, per se. As you said, Brad came as a package deal with Tori, and from Dunbar's comments on the MTV.com aftershow, he realized that.
Dan and Ty have both had moments of extreme emotional volatility. Tyler may be annoying, but you can be fairly sure he's not going to behave the way Dan and Ty both have in the past while intoxicated. Dan is clean now, apparently, but he was a huge ol' mess on the Island--and he wasn't good in competitions, either. He could be a strong player, but he could also be a liability. Same with Ty, who is definitely a loose canon. Tyler, less so, and as a personal trainer he's probably in good shape. Why not take the person with the least potential downside from a personal standpoint in that situation?
Cara Maria...same deal. She's very strong physically, but she didn't impress anyone with her mental game on FM2. If the veterans knew who she was, they probably saw her as the girl who lost first even though she had the mighty Darrell as a partner.
I don't think we know enough about Chet as a competitor to determine who's the better buy in a Chet versus Luke sale.

And Dunbar definitely wasn't the only one to realize it either.

This makes A LOT of sense, and I now agree. :D lol. Personally, I'd still take Luke because at least he did something. Someone who is mentally weak is just as much a disadvantage to a team as who is physically weak.
I've seen Abe's website for his book, I must say I'm impressed.
Glad to see Abe back.
It's about time :D
How did you like the episode?
If you picked a team of weak players, you'd just lose all the missions lol. If you picked all the good players, you'd win the missions so you wouldn't have to worry about going home too much. I think that's why a balanced team is best, if you're a moderate player, there's easier targets to throw in and you have strong players to help win the missions.
But the strong players will throw you to the wolves first. I would pick a relatively weaker team with hope that all the strong i.e head-strong players would have major conflict within their ranks and turn on each other which may eek you out a win-- there is always chaos on Top Chef when all the "best" cooks are on the same team. Plus, if I were destined to go home, I would rather do it later than sooner, which would be easier to achieve as the captain of a weaker team.
I don't think they had a ton to go off of in evaluating the Fresh Meat. I believe only 4 or 5 of the 10 episodes had aired when they left, and one of those didn't even have an exile.
Wow, finally got to watch this episode!! On the plus side I only have to wait one more day to watch the next episode! Great first episode, looking forward to the next one!
