Battlestar Galactica: Season 4
Battlestar Galactica Battlestar Galactica is one of the most dramatic, well written series on television today. Even though it takes place in space with a science fiction premise, the rich content of the stories told parallel societal issues today, while at the same time not being heavy handed. This month we began the final leg of the journey to earth with the premiere of season four. Will humanity be saved? I'd like to start by talking about what has come before. The first two seasons would rate in my top five all time epic series. There was enough imaginative draw to tide me over what was at best a latent third season that in my opinion did not deliver. Ever since the colonists landed on New Caprica, I watched and waited for the pieces to be put back together. Even though I did enjoy some of the plot twists of the second exodus such as the reveal that Kara in fact did not have a daughter or the actual final battle itself, there was a change in the series that has taken almost twenty installments to remedy. Then there was the finale. The four Cylons reveled blew my mind, but at the same time left me skeptical. How could they possibly be Cylons? Also, now that the Chief is a known Cylon, it is clear that his daughter is half Cylon. This takes away from the special value of Athena and Helo's child and leaves me to believe that the writers are going to be scrambling to explain the back stories of all these new "evil" robots (especially Colonel Tigh! What the Frak!) From what I have read, NBC is fully to blame for the turn of events. They wanted to kill the large story arc system that had been in place from the beginning and tell the tales in succinct one episode pieces in order to allow for the show to be a better draw for new audience members. This backfired mightily, and season four will not follow the same path. With the original creative spirit back in force, I expect this to be the best season yet and even though the mess season three created is going to be tough to tie up, I am sure that Ronald D. Moore is more than capable of doing so. With that being said, I was very happy for the return of the series and the rebirth of Starbuck whom I am madly in love with (quite literally?) Even though it is very suspicious that she just returned out of the blue after going up in massive explosion, I personally am going to cut her some slack. Of course in Razor it was said by a hybrid that she would "end humanity" but I think we can take that with a grain of salt. Those **** hybrids are not always right, are they? I seem to be in a minority when it comes to Lee and Starbuck. I think they should be together, although I have heard that it will never happen. With Lee leaving the Galactica and Starbuck heading off to find earth, the opportunity looks gone and that final "friend kiss" seems to have sealed the fate of that love story. Speaking of Lee, I am not sure I am going to enjoy him leaving his flight job. Even though he always bordered on incompetence when in command, it was enjoyable to see him in the cockpit and I was never a fan of the courtroom or political portions of the show which he will now reside. In Cylon news, the fact that the Sixs took out the "reason inhibitor" in the chrome jobs was sweet! In the preview for next week "new" Six asks a centurion to do something, and then follows it up with, "Please...." I love the look that the centurion gave her! They are now self aware. Crazy! I am already counting down the days until Friday! So say we all...
I’d like to start by talking about what has come before. The first two seasons would rate in my top five all time epic series. There was enough imaginative draw to tide me over what was at best a latent third season that in my opinion did not deliver.
I absolutely agree with you on this. I was very disappointed in season 3, (Not as much as with season 3 of Lost though) New Caprica was essentially a waste of time, IMO. OMG, I almost fell out of my chair when they revealed the four. Especially with Colonel Tigh! What the Frakk indeed! I too, have been wondering about the significance of another half-cylon child. They had spent so much time on Athena and Halo's daughter being special I guess I assumed the child was an anomaly and therefore, couldn't/wouldn't happen with just any human/cylon couple. I don't know about this development. Count me in the minority as well. I think it should be Lee and Kara all the way. I also am disappointed that Lee is leaving Galactica. How long do you think we have to wait to find out who the fifth is? Any ideas as to who it might be? I think for it to be Kara is too easy. I can't wait until Friday either, as this season has me already captivated with what will come next...
How long do you think we have to wait to find out who the fifth is? Any ideas as to who it might be? I think for it to be Kara is too easy.
I hope it is not Starbuck. I want a real good explanation as to where she was for two months and I don't want that answer to involve the "C Word!" I have bad news and worse news... The bad news: Katee Sackoff says that she has read the script for episode 14 (which is counting 2 for Razor so really 12) and she still doesn't know what the frak happened to her! That does not bode well for us finding out anytime soon, unless of course she is lying (which I hope she is!) The worse news: Moore said that the final Cylon would be revealed in the second half of the season, but not the last episode. Everything is now pointing to this being in 2009 (I have been doing some research today and 19/20 sites say 2009 for the second half of the season.) This is going to be a long grueling story arc over the next year, but unlike most other shows I think it will be worth the wait. My best guess for the final Cylon is Lee. Remember Leoben said Adama was a Cylon to the president before she threw him out an airlock. We all thought the wrong one! Then again, Moore said that the final Cylon was not seated in the Last Supper picture, so who knows (as Lee is in it.)
(I have been doing some research today and 19/20 sites say 2009 for the second half of the season.)
Ugh! I hate that they made us wait so long already.
This is going to be a long grueling story arc over the next year, but unlike most other shows I think it will be worth the wait.
I agree, let's just hope they don't frak us.
My best guess for the final Cylon is Lee. Remember Leoben said Adama was a Cylon to the president before she threw him out an airlock. We all thought the wrong one!
This thought just blew my mind! I had never even considered Lee.
This thought just blew my mind! I had never even considered Lee.
I bet that is why he left Galactica to join the quorum of 12. He is working his way up the food chain. Maybe at some point in the near future he becomes vice president. Then Roslin dies before they reach earth (if the prophecy holds true.) He takes over....and then *flips cylon switch* DOOOOOOOOOOOM! I have a feeling it is all going to end bad. Really bad. The show has somewhat depressing overtones and the word on the street is that the finale will not be tying up loose ends in a tidy bow. It is going to be gritty, just like it has always been. Maybe the reason Thrace causes the "end of humanity" is because she will not kill Lee (undying love) and he ends the world by nuking earth! Alright....I am grabbing at straws. Going to have to watch Friday for more clues. ;)
With every great narrative there is a beginning, middle and an end. With the final season of Battlestar Galactica we are going to see a season long story arc which means in the first half (2008) there is going to be much beginning, a little middle and no end in sight. I have resigned myself to this reality and was able to appreciate the detailed pieces we were being offered in episode 3 as part of a richer rhapsody of storylines that were setting the table for a future feast. The focus of "The Ties That Bind" was the continuing tale of the recently revealed Cylons and Cally's tortured relationship with the Chief after arriving at the nebula. Immediately I could see a massive personality shift in Tory as she flirted with Tyrol at the bar. She is obviously the most Cylon of the Cylons in these early days of discovery. Her demeanor was cold and mechanical. It would seem that actress Rekha Sharma is truly embracing her role as a skin job! Aboard Colonial One, we are given the setup for what I suspect will become colossal battle between Adama Jr. and Roslin. The script for those scenes were directly grabbed from the headlines as we had a president who was consolidating power, ignoring the articles of colonization and manipulating the justice system. Strangely enough, I always saw Roslin as a "Democrat" but she more recently seems to be echoing "Republican" sentiments. Our time on the "earth bound" Demetrius was short. Starbuck was acting insane and even though the pitch that she is a Cylon ("I no longer human, but like some alien thing") was a bit heavy handed, overall the time was well spent. Especially the use of the word frak and all the fraking. Every good space epic needs gratuitous fraking. I have a feeling in the near future the "quest for earth" segment of the story arc is going to be what drives the show (BTW: The vipers sitting on the Demetrius deck looked cool as ****. Are we going to have sewage ship on basestar action in the near future?) I am totally loving the Cylon civil war over in toasterville. I have a thing for Sixes so I hope that the "evil" Cavils do not prevail in wiping them out. I have a feeling that the secret attack will not be a success and hopefully the "good" Cylons will somehow escape what looks to be the makings of a massacre. Oh, and I couldn't get over the Cavil & Sharon on screen kiss. I never would have called it. Sadly, Cally was sucked out of a Viper airlock with the help of newly minted ****** Tory and now the Chief is fully free to become a monster. The half Cylon baby was saved and I think that "it" will play a pivotal part in the coming weeks. I was not personally sad to see Cally's frosty death being she never appealed to me as a character, but the way in which she was killed did leave a bitter taste in my mouth. It is hard to say what is just on the horizon, but I mainly hope that Starbuck snaps out of her funk and begins the march to earth; Please God don't let her be a Cylon!
Oh, and I couldn't get over the Cavil & Sharon on screen kiss. I never would have called it.
Yeah, I was like "did that just really happen?". I had to go back to make sure I saw it correctly. At this point, I am much more interested with the cylons and their realtionships than the humans. Its crazy. With the civil war, the raiders and centurians becoming self-aware and now cylon to cylon affection. Very intereting.

With the civil war, the raiders and centurians becoming self-aware and now cylon to cylon affection. Very intereting.
I think the Cylons have always been the best part of the show (not counting the new "made up" ones.) I know for a fact that Lucy Lawless (Deana) is back this season (she did a top ten list on Letterman and would not be doing so for a show that she was no longer on.) That leads me to believe that the attack is not successful (although their FTL is fraked up so I have no idea how they are going to get out of that situation) and Deana is unboxed. We know there is a number six in the brig on Galactica and also we have Athena on the Dimitrius, so only Leoben of the conspirators seems to not have a clone floating around somewhere if in fact the baseship is destroyed and they are not able to regenerate. Battlestar Galactica Top Ten List (Letterman)
Ugggh! I am so frustrated right now! I am tired of watching "building" episodes. And how can they show all the drama happening with the cylons last week, and not a word this week of the outcome? I am not sure I like where this is going. I mean, is this what we have to look forward to over the next six episode? Then we will have to wait a full year to FINALLY get some sort of conclusion? It's one thing to have a charcter go a little mad, quite another, IMO, to have multiple major characters lose their mind at once. I am done venting now.
I am with you Jobson. I felt like we got a whole lot of nothing this week. Normally they do a good job at weaving some larger moralistic story into the plot and still give us action, but this episode was all about current America in a not so tongue and cheek manner. I am shocked that we did not hear anything about the Cylon civil war and there was no sign of Starbuck and crew - which are the two major plot points that I tuned in to see! I knew once they stuck Lee in a political role we would be forced to sit through hours of "CSPAN" drama, rather then watch him fly a viper and fight. Hopefully next week things pick up. I pray to the Gods that they are not saving everything worth seeing until the mid season split and then leave us hanging for another year!
I am praying to the One True God that tonights episode does not blow chunks.
I am praying to the One True God that tonights episode does not blow chunks.
Haha! Yes, I am also amongst the converted. No more Zeus, Hera, Athena, Poseidon, Ares, Apollo etc for me if I can just get some **** Cylon on Cylon action tonight! :wink2:
There is nothing to write home about concerning last night's episode. Although we did stay out of the senate which I find to be the most grueling, the time aboard the Dimitrius was less then eventful and I just can't get into this new Baltar shtick. The good news is that I think we are on the cusp of a great episode. The preview for next week seems to show that Starbuck does jump to the basestar (maybe in a viper?) and speak to the hybrid. The bad news is that the hybrid tells her that she is going to lead humanity to its end! Noooooooo! There has to be another destiny for Thrace! Please don't take us down that path. Please... In the back of my mind I am starting to believe it. I read this:
Edward James Olmos, who plays Adm. William Adama on SCI FI Channel's series Battlestar Galactica, told SCI FI Wire that it's not inconceivable that all of the characters will die by the end of the upcoming fourth and final season--and that would be OK with him. Not that that is in any way a spoiler for the upcoming season. But Olmos said it would be fitting for a show that he called a "commentary on our times" and the "most worthwhile piece of television" he has ever done. "Basically, if it’s true to form, no one makes it," Olmos said in an interview at SCI FI's upfront presentation to advertisers in New York earlier this month. Producers have been tight-lipped about their plans for the show's climax and dénouement, though it's believed that the fourth season will take up the sudden reappearance of Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) and her revelation that she's been to Earth. Meanwhile, four people must deal with the sudden knowledge that they are Cylons. If everyone were to die? "I think that people would be shocked, and they'd be hurt, and they would be totally, totally frustrated," Olmos said. "But I've got to tell you, that's a truth that people have to realize. We may do it to ourselves [in real life]. It all depends on us now and what choices we make."
I am depressed.
I just can't get into this new Baltar shtick.
I was thinking the exact same thing as I watched. I am just not intrigued by who he is as a character at this point. It is almost as bad as Lee and the senate to me.
The good news is that I think we are on the cusp of a great episode.
If we spend the week fasting/praying do you think it would help?
The bad news is that the hybrid tells her that she is going to lead humanity to its end! Noooooooo! There has to be another destiny for Thrace! Please don't take us down that path. Please...
Why, Oh why would they end it this way? It kind of is the new trend in entertainment though... stories with happy endings are becoming a thing of the past.
I am depressed
Me too......
I just finished reading the recap over at Entertainment Weekly and he came to the same conclusion as we did: Shit happened. We don't care. Bring back the Battlestar we love. Please next week don't suck!
I found a great (however long) blog on who the final Cylon is on Battlestar. An interesting read if you feel like giving the theory a spin. I went where I would have never thought. Could be considered spoilerish: Cellounge - The Final Cylon Will Be Revealed Now!
You weren't lying about it being a long post. Very interesting. I would rather it be her than Lee!
You weren't lying about it being a long post. Very interesting. I would rather it be her than Lee!
Me too. It makes sense, but who knows. The most intricate of theories are usually the most intricately wrong. I guess we will have to wait until this time next year to find out.
I thought that last night's episode was a step in the right direction. We actually touched upon plot points that made sense and also they were areas were I wanted to see the story go (beyond more Baltar/One God ramblings.) On that note, things are still slow. I think I would be better off skipping a week and watching two episodes at once in order to get a sense of forward progress. Everything on the Base Star was awesome. I really wanted to see Sam try and interface with the ship, but knew it was not going to happen. The fact that the "five" are connected to helping the cause was good to hear, although I am still a bit weary as to how it is all going to go down. What did the hybrid mean about Starbuck leading them to their doom? I wonder if humans and cylons die as separate entities, but the cy-human childern live on creating a new society. That would be a sad ending. UGH! This is so painful. It is like crocheting a sweater. It takes forever (and is boring to most) but the end product is worth the wait (I hope.)
UGH! This is so painful. It is like crocheting a sweater. It takes forever (and is boring to most) but the end product is worth the wait (I hope.)
Umm- I think last nights episode was worse than crocheting a sweater. I do not like Lee in politcs, I can't stand prophetic Baltar, I wish the President would hurry up and die or something and the singing (while I was impressed by the voice) was really grating on my nerves. I almost want to give up on the show completely. I know that I won't, I am still waiting for the story to move forward and give some much needed answers. I am just discouraged because I get the feeling they are going to leave us hanging until the 2nd half of the final season to give us ANYTHING... I want my BSG back!

Also, there is nothing to talk about. The entire episode sucked and to be honest - there were parts of it I didn't fully follow or care to follow. I dare say I even used the Fast Forward button (more then once.) Yup, I can hear the sound of toilets flushing every time I think about "the new" BSG.
I keep thinking about the how it says "All Will Be Revealed" during every sneak peek and I have come to the conclusion they mean in the very last episode somtime in the fall of 2009!
I keep thinking about the how it says "All Will Be Revealed" during every sneak peek and I have come to the conclusion they mean in the very last episode somtime in the fall of 2009!
That is totally what they mean, lol! ;)
I love BSG. Unfortunately, Season 3 and 4 have left me on the verge of tears. I use to think baltar was hilarious. Come on he was sleeping with lucy lawless and tricia helfer. At least Colonel Tigh is still a ******. According to the previews are edited, Tigh punches Commander Adama in the face. Also another interesting face in the preview was of the Lee's blind lawyer. Could he be the last cylon? The last episode sucked, hopefully this episode will be much better. Sharon randomly shooting number four :/ Really? Yawn! BTW the last cylon is Tom Zarek. Tom FTW!!!
Welcome Weirdboy! Here's to hoping for a better episode tomorrow. Maybe we can move forward, or something. I'm still depressed knowing that not only will all not be revealed until the last episode,-next year- but that it is more likely that nothing will be revealed until then.... (That was one crazy run-on sentence. I hope it made sense to someone!)
Last night's episode was devastatingly bad. I think I might have nodded off at one point. It was like watching C-SPAN, except worse. I am hoping that Moore and Co. are reading message boards around the web and getting an idea of how much people are hating this season so that they might be inspired to make MAJOR changes to the final handful of episodes, before it is too late. Maybe they could make them logical, interesting and eventful for starters? It is sad when the most anticipated part of each episode is the preview for next week... I am fed up with BattleSenate Bore-actica.
Because there was such buzz about this show in the Sci-Fi community, I watched every episode this season hoping against hope that I would be magically transformed into a passionate, adoring fan. It never happened. I liked the original BSG with Loren Green better. At least on the original show I could figure out the plot. I hope the writers enjoyed whatever drugs they were using because that is the only justification for writing this bad...
Last night's episode was devastatingly bad.
This season is shaping up to be worse than last, imo. Each episode gets worse. I totally agree that I was WAY more interested in next weeks sneek peek than the hour long snoozefest that was this episode. I can not say it enough, I hate Lee as a politician! I guess everybody now has no doubt about who/what Starbuck is. How do you go from we don't even think you are Starbuck to her being in command again? Are they ever going to even try to explain what happened to her? How can a cylon impregnate another cylon? It was so weird how little they touched on this. It really makes no sense. The old man waiting in a raptor for Rosyln while the fleet jumps away? I just can't believe how off track we have gotten. Every character seems to be behaving contrary to what we have grown to love and know about them. Have they already shot the final episodes? Is there any chance they can salvage this?
Have they already shot the final episodes? Is there any chance they can salvage this?
The last I heard (about 3 weeks ago) they were on episode 14 (of 20) so there is still hope, just not much. I doubt they would do a rewrite at this point (being they just rewrote it to make it like it is now!) BTW: Once filming ends they are planning on doing 3 TV movies that will be back in time (like Razor) that will air in between season 4 part 1 and season 4 part 2. Those might be all there is to look forward to....
I didn't really think Razor was all that impressive, so I fear the 3 TV movies might be a waste of 6 hours I will never get back!
I didn't really think Razor was all that impressive, so I fear the 3 TV movies might be a waste of 6 hours I will never get back!
Razor sucked.....but compared to what is on lately - It is like the fracking good old days, lol. You don't know how much I'd pay to see an actual space battle or something cool like that....
