Non-Profit Alleges Environmental Damage in Panama
Here is a link to perhaps the best commentary I've every read about a "local's" reaction to the making of a reality show. At the end of the article, vevmo gets a mention as being the writer's best source of info about the show. This is a must read for anyone who follows the challenges! "Reality" TV Gets Real Trashy
Nobody was real clear about what was going on and I was told that MTV was trying to keep the whole thing a secret in order to keep unwanted visitors from showing up at the site. I can understand that; I wouldn't want a crowd hanging around while I was trying to create a scenario in which everyone was pretending that the event was happening on a deserted island. It would be rather hard to convince the public that they were watching an adventure in a remote location while a crowd was standing in the background.
This is pure comedy! Update: TMZ has the story.
Is anyone else really disappointed with MTV? I mean, I knew they had a slightly warped sense of "green" with the filming of RW: Hollywood (because a gigantic house filled with new furniture and new cars, even if they are hybrids, is not green), but this is just disgusting. I wonder what, if anything, castmembers may have to say about this.
I get a laugh out of people who think they are green because they drive a hybrid that gets 50 MPG. Heck, a 1982 civic got 55! Unless you have an electric car (charged via wind or solar) or are biking your *** to work, you are dumping tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere each year (the average Prius releases 4 tons of CO2 eq per year ) with your "green" car.
I wonder what, if anything, castmembers may have to say about this.
They are probably not aware of what is left behind as they actually leave before the breakdown process begins. Of course, even if they were aware they would not be allowed to voice their thoughts.

And also what they would say about being in a not-so-deserted area after all.

Wow, I like this guy. He made excellent points and it was very well written. All that time we wondered what was going on down there in July, and here this guy had a front row seat (albeit, an unwanted one.) Either way, great info, good find V1.

The Karma following Justin Booth's producer's blog just seems so fitting.

Just where was this guy when B and I were searching from someone from Bocas del Toro to talk to us during filming.
Just where was this guy when B and I were searching from someone from Bocas del Toro to talk to us during filming.
I emailed a few conservation groups in that area back in June including ITEC, but I unfortunately missed this one. I see that reddit picked up the story and I am sure Digg will soon enough so I have a feeling this is going to blow up over the next few days. Lots of bad PR for MTV... p.s. I am trying to get my hands on the full sized pictures of the devastation as TMZ is just blowing up the images from the story which are not particularly good.
The responsible party for Bunim Murray Productions is their challenge executive producer, Justin Booth. He is blogging on mtv. You can send him a comment about this article at Challenge Dailies

I have one question.. Are these challenges scripted? If so.. I'm done.
I have one question.. Are these challenges scripted? If so.. I'm done.
Don't tell me you're worried that these people can act? HAHA! No, they are not dialogue scripted. What the writer of the article is talking about finding is most likely the ytranscripst of relevant tape shot during the month on the island. The tapes are regularly sent back to BMP in Van Nuy, CA, where transcript are made of every tape. Copies of those transcripts are then emailed to the challenge site so the producers and directors have that info available to them. What the have "in the can" becomes very important as one begins to build a show. As the challenge develops, you rely on what you've already shot to help you know how and where to focus upcoming interviews. There is a second kink of script looking thing that could have been found, and that would be the loose story outline that most reality shows use every day. If left to any cast, the show would likely implode, so you have to guide where the action is going to go. Occasionally you get surprised, but mostly things go fairly close to the plan. The story outline may also include planned interview questions, text of what others have already said on the same or similar subjects (you want to avoid getting repetitive answers since you are probably only going to use one), and notations on the activities scheduled for that day and what OTF's (on the fly interviews) need to be done that day. Some shows go so far as to include a desired outcome in their daily storyline so that the director's interaction with cast can steer them in one direction or another my asking specific questions, etc. It's impossible to know from the description given exactly what was left behind, but the above are the two most likely possibilities.
Director: So Dan, what are your thoughts about Dave? Dan: He seems OK. Director: Why do you think he thinks you're a closet homosexual? Dan: WHAT? Director: Oh, well he just mentioned it in passing. Here, have a shot. Dan: What the hell are you talking about? *gulp* Director: Well, I don't want to start anything. He just mentioned that and something about your mother. Have a couple more shots. I am sure he did not mean anything by it. Actually, he didn't say "gay" per say but hinted that you were probably bi and that your mom was a pro. Dan: WHAT!!! WHAT DID HE SAY???!! *gulp, gulp* Director: Hmm, Sounds like you and Dave need a heart to heart about that and his plans for your sister once he gets off the island... Dan: HUH???! I AM GOING TO KILL THAT ***KER!! AHHHHH! (seen running off toward Dave...) Director: (to film crew) Roll cameras...

You've never produced one of these things, yet you are already a pro at the manipulation of cast members. (Readers have no idea how close to the truth you really are -- though it is slightly more subtle in most cast cases. )

So do they have to clean this s**t up? Or are they just going to leave this disgrace?
So do they have to clean this s**t up? Or are they just going to leave this disgrace?
LM, that is an excellent question. I think we should ask MTV PR office for their response. I wonder if they will give us the "Sunny side of truth."

Well my goodness I get pissed when I see people throw garbage out their windows, or leave it laying in the park! There are no good excuses for this kind of behavior, and MTV pays enough people! They should not be so disrespectful!

If they can hire a set up crew, a camera crew, a medical crew, a crew to fetch lunch (or whatever), then where is the CLEANUP crew?! I really hope this does blow up in their faces (MTV) and they get tons of bad press. It's just unacceptable.
I was able to get in touch with the article author and he is going to be returning to Panama in December and will be hiking to the former film site to see if it is still in the state of disrepair it was in when the photos were taken back in July. He is also trying to get in touch with the photographer that has all the originals to see if he would be willing to share full sized copies of the images. I have a funny feeling that beach will look immaculate by December with all the bad MTV PR flying around...
I hope it blows up in MTV's face too. I really do. It's unacceptable and totally hypocritical.
Dave posted a blog on IAmOnMTV.com about this article, so hopefully it'll get more fan exposure. I know he's not the most popular, but he's the only one writing blogs on there any more, so his blogs stay on the main site longer (and they're the only ones there to read anyways).

He didn't. The only thing Dave did in response to a comment left by site member "rejectioncity" was to post the link to the tree coalition organization and write that he hoped the story was not true, but that people should check it out for themselves. I'm not complaining that he did something, though. The other cast members were sent the link to the same article, but since Dave is about the only one who actually posts at iamonmtv.com, I doubt that the others have even seen it.
