I would really like to know three MTV shows the get higher ratings? Nothing gets the ratings they use to with all the options and competition available now. Plus most people I know DVR, watch On Demand, or online. Nielsen ratings are unreliable and skewed. I don't know anyone who is polled by Nielsen. Ratings obviously play a factor but I am sure quite a number of other things are taken into account as well. I don't get why people come here to be negative about the show and ratings, if you don't enjoy the show why even post here?
If you prefer the empirical data, here are some random dates for which I pulled the total # of viewers and those in the 18 - 49 demo for MTV shows.
Mon, Feb 18
Teen Mom 2 (10:00) - MTV
2.656 million viewers; 2.038 million adults 18-49 (1.6 rating), #2
Tuesday, Feb 19
Awkward (10:00) - MTV
1.166 million viewers; 0.652 million adults 18-49 (0.5 rating), #12
Girl Code (10:30) - MTV
1.132 million viewers; 0.689 million adults 18-49 (0.5 rating), #11
Thursday, Feb 21
Ridiculousness (10:00) - MTV
1.338 million viewers; 0.859 million adults 18-49 (0.7 rating),
Thursday, May 2, 2013
The Show with Vinny (10:00) - MTV
1.197 million viewers; 0.807 million adults 18-49 (0.6 rating),
Wednesday, May 22
The Real World: Portland (10:00) - MTV
0.806 million viewers; 0.577 million adults 18-49 (0.5 rating),
I don't think Awkward and Girl Code were airing in February.
And The Show with Vinny's ratings have declined since the premier to a level that doesn't even make the tvbythenumbers list.

You are correct re Awkward and GC. Those are from May 21, as reported on May 22.
The problem to me is that they still aren't casting real enough people. Everyone girl isn't a model and every guy isn't a gym rat. Instead of trying to edit drama in the show they need to find very different personalities that will automatically create friction in the house. I think they should do like Bad Girls Club and air the Challenge trailer at the end of the Real World reunion and then air the Real World trailer at the end of the Challenge reunion.

I think it's more a matter of these people not being compelling enough to wonder how they're going to move forward in the few months they're in the house. Vegas worked because there were many different storylines that could take off and go in a bunch of different directions by people who had that special quality that made you care about said storyline.
Then I look at St. Thomas where Brandon was the main person I was intrigued by because I wanted to see how his story unfolded. What special story do these people have? Adopted? Family sucked? ********? Big deal, that's not that special anymore like it used to be.

I agree I feel like they have good stories but they aren't compelling. Ana for example had a good story this week but after watching her actions with that whole mean girls **** last week it was hard to relate to her.

The trick is casting people who are charismatic, have interesting and outgoing personalities, aren't afraid to be themselves... and when you put all of them together it creates an interesting dynamic. Which is how it used to be but idk what happened.
This is one reason why JS, which essentially was a Real World rip off, did so well. All of them contributed to the story lines, all of them had interesting personalities. It was never only 1 person got all the focus, they equally contributed to making it a good show. So I agree, it's not so much about drama as it is about finding people who even when they're not fighting you still want to watch.

Jersey Shore was not a rip off. Just because they had what 8 people doesn't make it so.

Absolutely not true! When you look at the reality career of SallyAnn Salsano, Jersey Shore's creator, you see a track record of skilled accomplishments both in working for others in with her own company, 495 Productions.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1133163/
If anything, SallyAnn gave Jacquelyn French exactly what MTV was looking for in JS. There are many similar creative elements broadly used across the reality TV genere, but SallyAnn's shows have a distinctly unique style, and I know few in the industry who would suggest she copies anyone's casting. It is one of her unique characteristics.
Is the reason this keeps getting renewed is the cheap production costs? No writers, the "actors" make pennies. I'm sure RW Portland cost a lot less than the third season of Teen Wolf.
Then what are you saying? Like what the ****? Please tell me you're joking. You can be ugly and still have an interesting story and make up for it. You can cure a Trey
What I said was very clear. I don't want to watch a show with 7 ugly people
John Murray said in a recent interview that one of the first things they look at during casting is if the person "is attractive or has an interesting look". I personally don't want to watch a show with 7 ugly people, but they dont all have to be models. I want to see a season of a good mix..Back to New York comes to mind - everyone was cute but not like "omg model status". I feel like they need to casting more suicide girls, Frankie SD style chicks, mixed with all american looking kids and urban kids. That would create a good dynamic. I just don't get it. The Bad Girls Club ALWAYS has such a diverse looking cast and RW just falls flat.
I said it once, and I'll say it again. I hate when they cast passive aggresive people. Alex, Pris, Sam, Zach, Nate, Jessica, Ana, Marlon, Cooke, Leroy, the entire DC cast..all pointless..
That's my point. In the old seasons you had good looking people but everyone didn't look like they came off the set of a photo shoot. No offense to anyone but I wish they would would also quit casting a majority Caucasian cast. It really helped Bad Girls Club when they stopped doing it.

No, while the "actors" are poorly compensated, the fixed production costs are rather high. BTW, writers for the Real World are called "story editors." A couple of years ago, I was told that several recent RW seasons went $500K over budget for location build out costs. That has to put a hit on the show's profit margin, if true.
An additional note for reality production junkies, this season' producer is Travis Bible who worked on "Mrs. Eastwood" and the Kardashian series, the latter of which is known for its slick production values. It doesn't appear the he brought that talent with him to RW.
In what world is "It was experientially derivative." a sentence. It pains my eyes to read what you write, sometimes. Its almost medieval, or maybe even Neanderthal if they had access to thesauruses.
It would be the discipline of law school, the 7th floor of the Department of State, and the E-Ring of the Pentagon -- all places where an IQ is remarkably necessary.
They can cast all the diversity all they want but if editors/producers and cast members don't show us or tell us why people behave the way they do, what really lead up to situations, open up, give us background info and character development then the cast is not going to connect. But to me an appealing/popular city would help too, that would be a start.
Guys, this is not the place for you to discuss what you want to see in a cast. Clearly most of you missed the 40+ posts that were moved to the generic RW thread.
This thread is to discuss the ratings. Not "OMG THIS WOULD TOTALLY BOOST THE RATINGS" ****.
REAL WORLD XXVIII MTV 10:00 PM 1.01 0.6

lol um
Let's hope this episode kills it with ratings that way the Real World could fully switch to Wannabe Celebrity Deathmatch! I kid, I kid. ;)
Edit: Spoke too soon, ratings still suck hahahah!!
I'm too slow for you young pups. :)
last night's big hype received a .6 rating with only 1.01M viewers, down slightly from the week before in the demo (18-49) as reported by TVBYTHENUMBERS.
Apparently just about everyone watching seems to have visited vevmo in the past 18 hours. :) Bacchus' bookie thanks you.

I don't have access to the statistics of vevmo, but my guess is that the number of people viewing vevmo stayed the same, but the number of people contributing to the discussion increased.
question to anyone who can answer it what was the average or norm for real world ratngs in the hey day to compare this too?
Ratings for older seasons are tough to find since there weren't a ton of websites reporting them like there are now, but Vegas which was only 2 years ago, more than doubled the ratings for this season. This is without a doubt the lowest rated season of The Real World ever though. Season 1 and Season 3 of the Real World were absolutely massive. Puck is probably the most well known reality tv person before the year 2005.
question to anyone who can answer it what was the average or norm for real world ratngs in the hey day to compare this too?
For the week ending June 26, 2005:
Real World XVI (Austin) 2,984,000 in the 12-34 demographic.
May 12, 2011
Las Vegas 2 2,070,000 in the 18-49 demo.
Key West (unknown date) 3,300,000
Bottom line: People have been cheering because Nia got the show over the 1.0M mark..LOL

Ouch. If anything this should've increased it. I'm sulking now like a bad episode of Maury.
