Just curious, does people watching the show online factor into ratings at all? I mean, some people have cut out cable and just watch everything online now. I actually watched all of Exes and St. Thomas from iTunes(yes I paid money to watch them). I watched Cutthroat on MTV.com, and Rivals and BOTS2 On Demand. I'm at work at 10 at night so I never see the Challenge when it premiers.

No
Comical how every week some major event comes on to threaten the ratings. Now there are supposedly three shows everyone is dying to see that came on at the same time. What's next? Ten bucks says that during the opening credits the second coming begins and Jesus appears outside everyone's windows and has a message that lasts 59 minutes.

Next week is American Horror Story.
Halloween is 2 weeks after that.
Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked at all if it is under 1 million next week. This week is going to alienate some viewers. It was the second horrific mission out of 4 and no elimination round. American Horror Story is also a huge problem.
This ******* blows. Even though FM2 sucked in the ratings, its still beating BOTS2. I've come to realization that this season won't come close to getting a 1.7-1.9 rating. So with Jersey Shore ending and the RW and Challenges close by, it looks like I'm not going to be watching MTV anymore.

I think The Challenge and The Real World will be renewed anyway but I highly doubt we ever see a cast like this again. People like Johnny & Paula have to be loving this.
Johnny and Paula are tripping if they think their the reason the ratings are down. I refused to believe.
The veterans not being a part of this cast is absolutely part of the problem IMO. It didn't have to be Johnny & Paula but they needed a much better mix of new & old. As an "older viewer" I'm running out of people I know anything about and they're doing a poor job making me care about any of the newbies. And half the missions were poor along with the "endurance" elimination

I don't believe it either. I mean these challenges were getting these type of ratings even with those 2 (and the rest of the Idiot vets) on them so I don't get what they're so happy about(that is if they are which they might be).

I don't recall ratings ever being this bad? Last season they were around 2M.
For comparison sake--the fourth episode last season was 1.94M--that's a huge difference from barely over 1M
Fresh Meat II was the only one comparable to this and this season is likely going to continue to fall--and the one thing those seasons have in common...a bunch of people that many of the Challenge fans don't know. Rookies = Fresh Meat to many.

I don't know. I just don't think many people are interested at all in these shows anymore. Real World St. Thomas wasn't too bad and that got horrible ratings.
I think the preshow alliances kind of destroyed this recent seasons. I mean drama wise BOTS2 has (and will) a lot to offer however the challenges itselves are boring because of this alliance that was formed before the show. When the three best teams form a alliance, this is like a nail in the coffin for a reality show.
It started with Rivals when JEK and Company had the majority of the votes and they sended in whoever they wanted/needed to.
BOTE: CT/Johnny/Mark/Dunbar had this F4 deal and had the power in their hands the entire time.

Exactly. I highly doubt they're the reason. I just think people aren't into this season because of the fact that the rookies don't know what they're doing, that's been a lot of the complaints I've seen, they're playing the game in a way that doesn't make sense to a lot of people.

True..But It's better than watching the Vets pick off the Rookies and then have a Predicable Elimination order and having the usual winners IMO.

Also the fact that they wrote off this season before it even started.
I like having a crop of new kids. I like the possible future matchups. Challenge fans may not feel the same though. I will say that competition this season has been very disappointing because of all rigging. There is very little integrity to the sport aspect which many of us tune in to see. Even in the old days when they had really silly challenges, they were still competitive.
I don't know if I have ever seen a season that lacked competition so badly. These shows always have alliances but they still managed to put on a competitive show. I don't know what's different, perhaps the alliance is just too big. Some viewers could be turned off by the mockery of the actual events.
I have to agree, when every challenge is being rigged its not really fun to watch. They really need to tighten up on the rules and make a rule, if suspected of not competing full out to be dqed. Or just have challenges that are harder to manipulate.
For MTV are these really bad ratings? Besides Jersey Shore and Teen Mom what really gets better ratings? Considering the competition I don't find the ratings to be TERRIBLE. Most people I know what the episodes on dvr and ondemand anyway.

Honestly, I don't see the Challenge getting cancelled with both Jersey Shore and the original Teen Mom ending.

I think some of it depends on if they plan on re-casting JS. That would be a disaster imo but knowing MTV I wouldn't be too surprised.

It's not the fact that these aren't great ratings. It's the fact that the shows ratings have decreased over the years. I'm not finding the ratings terrible compared to what it's up against, but then again, you can't really compare them because they aren't aimed towards the same demographic the majority of the time.
@fabulous788:
Good point on the declining ratings; however, it appears that this is an MTV wide problem. A recent article over at Deadline Hollywood mentions that execs are expecting ratings will be down "dramatically" this current fiscal year, even after coming off of ratings falling 30% in the last quarter.
“Looking at MTV’s 2012-13 programming lineup, it’s hard to believe there’s a high probability that any of these shows (on their own, or collectively) will offset the loss of Jersey Shore and Teen Mom 2,” Juenger says. “Returning shows like Awkward, Ridiculousness, and Teen Wolf have definitely not grabbed pop culture attention.” That could knock the wind out of MTV, which accounts for 18% of the ad sales at Viacom’s networks. Although Nickelodeon only has a few competitors, the analyst says that advertisers wanting to reach teens have “plenty of alternatives to MTV.”
Here lies the problem: competition. As ratings decrease in all of MTV shows, they will have to revamp their lineups. They may save some of the shows that are cheaper to produce (reality) while cutting the more expensive ones (scripted) before finding something that fits.
Or just have challenges that are harder to manipulate.
Based on the preview for next week, it's the mission based on intelligence/pop culture. That one should be hard to manipulate.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to that challenge, those types of challenges are usually my favourites anyways.
There are just WAY too many things that are on Wednesday at 10. Honey Boo Boo (even though that's over now), American Horror Story, plus ABC was promoting the show Nashville like crazy, not sure if that one was a hit though.
