Here's the thing that doesn't really upset me about the ratings--a lot of people DVR the show, a lot of people watch it online, and a lot of people catch it on reruns because MTV reruns it a lot. In fact, I think it's safe to say that the show is just as popular as it was before but the fact of the matter is that it's just more difficult to gauge now because catching it at 10pm is not the only way to see the newest episode.
Me thinks you are correct about the ratings issue generally. I think there is also an issue now with the competition in reality TV audience that wasn't there 5-10 years ago. I like Cancun well enough but I also think maybe they would do better going back to 1/2 shows if this is the extent of the "drama" in that there really are no deep storylines thus far.
Here's a way that can get RW better ratings:
Bring Road Rules back.
Then everyone will go back to watching RW and I'll be happy having RR back!
Sounds grand, don't you think?

This is a huge factor.
Ten years ago, "cable" was 40 channels, not 250 plus. Also, The Real World world was one of a handful of novelty "reality shows" that were available at the time.
These days many cable channels seemingly only run reality shows and as a whole reality programming makes up 25% of prime time options.
While more people are watching television than ever before, that audience is divided 250 ways and niches are so segmented at this point that it is hard enough to retain an audience over time, let alone build one.
Truthfully, Real World ratings will only continue to decrease no matter what they do and the current numbers are actually not that bad...
I have to admit, I like Deadliest Catch and even NYC Prep better than RW. I loved RR until the challenges all got to be silly "Eat this Frog's Brains" crap instead of things like skydiving. I guess the only way RW will up its ratings is to add some sort of competition/elimination element to it (after every 3 episodes let the fans vote somebody off and somebody to replace them or some silliness like that)

I think RW will have better ratings if they keep doing what they did with Brooklyn. I also agree about bring Road Rules back. But if they were to bring Road Rules back back, they would have to bring back the original Road Rules format, not something like VR.

Yeah I mean maybe some people like to watch castmembers******** all the time, but personally... Brooklyn was my favorite season and it was because they all did things aside from partying and getting LAID!
And I agree with you on RR (obviously since I was the one who brought it up) with not making it like VR. But RR probably ain't coming back... Now onto my crying time!
Lamb Chop, I honestly believe that if a vote-off rule is added to The Real World, that it will die. Look at Road Rules and you'll see my point. It all started with having a season on a boat. It is called ROAD Rules. Where is the road? Where is the RV? I was bored $***less when I was watching it not too long ago. From there they continued messing with it. Then came a vote-off rule and then a road master. Further dragging the series down. IMO, Real World is good now and it shouldn't be messed with. Hopefully the ratings would get better overtime just like what happened with The Duel 2.

No I agree with you. I wasn't the one who said they should add a vote off rule to Real World.
... but I have to say, there will come a time when *gasp* the Real World won't be on the air!
I think that the trailer doesn't do the show justice. At first I thought it was epic but after seeing part of the show...not so much. They didn't include any serious issues like Joeys grandma dying and Ayiiia cutting. Those probibaly would have appealed to the Brooklyn fans while still keeping the "party season" fans excited too.
Salt, I don't agree with that. Because if they showed everything then nobody would watch the show and they did show Joey crying in CJ's arm though which is from that grandma incident or the guitar thing.
The producers indicated the reason they went from 1/2 hour to hour was so they should show more of the serious stuff in a meaningful way i.e. add depth to the show. The biggest problem IMO is that they still edit the show with a profit motive. For instance, Conklin from Brooklyn clearly drank a LOT that never got shown because they elected to make him into someone warmer and fuzzier. Ayiiia's story somehow got truncated--I am not sure if it was because of the issue being so complex or because the Producers don't like her because she was voted in instead of being hand selected by them. I think they would do well to stick to the serious stuff if they did it in a more meaningful way and their interactions were more with in depth with people outside the house and less about the fights that happen when people living with you get on your nerves.
Salt and Vinegar, didn't you want the drunken sloppiness? I remember you saying that Brooklyn was "sooooooo boring" earlier in this thread and it was as serious as ever. Just saying.
Not trying to be rude or anything, my apologies if it comes off like that. :)

Yeah I am the one who floated that comment. I don't think they should do that but I think it would raise the ratings if viewers got a say (the reality is it is not feasible as taping is done way ahead of the broadcast unless it started to be a live/near live show in which case they would have to isolate the cast from the real world completely).
Blanky, I understand what you were saying. I was trying to say that they should show a lot of the serious side and a lot of the party side in the trailer to bring both sides in.
Thanks for clearing that up. Well, the show seems to be holding on strong to the 1.7 million range. We can only hope that it can increase at some time.
I found this article out on Media Life and I thought that I should post it here. I smell more serious seasons coming up! Here is the article.
The new programming is once again an indication that MTV is getting more serious as it attempts to reverse a long ratings slide among its target young adult audience.
"I think the audience has changed and is far more socially aware and politically active and wanting to address serious issues," said Tony DiSanto, MTV’s programming president. "It's great to be able to make shows and inspire them in primetime."
The network, which was once known as much for its social conscience through MTV News and Rock the Vote as for its hot tub scenes, isn’t abandoning fun altogether, however.

Oh, BTW, Real World once again didn't make the Top 10 this week. But 16 and Pregnant "Life After Labor" made it at number 3! I watched that as well and enjoyed it. 16 and Pregnant is also one of the more serious shows, and look where it ended up. A huge success. So could this mean more serious seasons for The Real World? I hope so.
I don't understand....it seems like everyone watches this season of RW....yet the ratings are showing other wise. Who knows Brooklyn did have great ratings....I guess a newer generation are becoming more involve with their community. I think the faith of RW will rest on the DC season. If DC is similar to Brooklyn, and the ratings are high, then RW might go back to the old format. I said it before and will say it again. If you put a serious topic like racism, or poverty people will talk and watch.
Real World ratings can improve. But MTV really just messes up, all the time. I was very happy @ the promotion for Brooklyn, since their was a commercial in every single break, literally. But, Cancun? They had commercials and such here and there, but still that is not enough. The ratings are proof. But we still have 3 seasons left of RW. D.C has picked up promotion of its own due to the huge amounts of blogs and press and news reports. So this may be a good sign. I hope D.C is on the serious side just so it can prove the people against it wrong, and also, along the way, pick up more fans for the series. But MTV is taking a more serious turn in its shows. You can read about that in the article I posted from Media Life Magazine before.
