Not to say that 18-49 and total viewer numbers don't matter - when I buy ads, one big factor is cost per viewer in my brand's target. One brand I've worked on is heavily skewed toward women 25-45. Depending on how and from where I buy my TV ads, the closest matching measurement was often Women 18-49. If a show that's target demographic is Persons 12-24 also happens to attract a lot of Women 18-49, I may buy ads there if the value is right even though its not targeted at my demo. ANY viewer is a good viewer to a network. Yes, you can charge the most for 23 year olds, but a show that does a 1.5 in P12-24 and has 1 Million viewers can't charge as much as a show that does a 1.3 in P12-24 and has 6 million viewers. Too many ads are for car insurance and phones that are targeted at everyone.
Damn, it's always energizing to read your comments! I couldn't agree more with your comments. Just an added thought... what demographic do you target if you're selling Depends for Adults?

Nothing annoys someone at Kimberly-Clark more than seeing it called "Depends" and not "Depend Underwear". I've never worked on Adult Undergarments, but I think you're safe just running during The Price Is Right.
I have a strong feeling last night’s episode is going to get good ratings, but they're going to drop majorly next week.
I have a strong feeling last night’s episode is going to get good ratings, but they're going to drop majorly next week.
I have a feeling the ratings today will reflect the drop from last night, and then a slight rise next week pretty much coasting around a .9/1 for the entire season.
CHALLENGE: BATTLE OF EXES MTV 10:00 PM 1908 1.2 Not that bad of a drop. -.2 and -300000 from last week
Here's the chart: via
Duke-UNC game definitely [strike]effected[/strike] affected the ratings.
Those ratings don't seem bad to me still. This challenge is doing much better than I thought it would.
These numbers are fine. Anything over 2.0 (last week) is a major gift. The question I always ask after a drop, week-to-week, is where did those @200.000 go?

I'm not sure if that could've had anything to do with it or not, but it sure didn't help.
I think (even though it's only been 3 episodes) it's safe to say Real World San Diego didn't hurt Battle of The Exes and that the Challenge series will continue after this season. Because BMP didn't give away a lot of sneak peaks in the trailers or previews so for the 1st time we don't know what's going to go down on any episode like mission winners or Dome match ups which makes things exciting. But BMP has to a better job of casting for the next Real World and keep up with the good work on casting for Challenges.
I would not be surprised if a good portion switched back to Revenge.
You are probably right on that. One of my teachers said Revenge is this generation's Dallas. It's becoming a very popular show.
The fact that the challenge is competing with such a high caliber college basketball game is encouraging. I was very wrong in my thinking that San Diego was going to hurt this season. I need to give more viewers credit. I also think that it is no coincidence that all of the self marketing the cast has been doing on sites like Twitter and through podcast is also helping to increase the peoples excitement. A think a people like Derrick and Brandon are really doing a lot for BMP and the challenge brand. These numbers will put Rivals to shame if they keep up.
These ratings have made me very happy and hopeful. Especially because this season, it seems like the majority of the episode is based on the actual challenges, and not drama. Perhaps that means people still like to watch amazing missions like the one last night, and just don't want to view trash.
I would not be surprised if a good portion switched back to Revenge.
Perhaps so... I watch Revenge "live" and TIVO the 11 pm challenge for next day viewing.
I'm from NC and I can almost guarantee you nobody from this state saw the challenge live last night including myself. UNC(hate it for my boys) vs Duke is almost like the Super Bowl around these parts.
Yea, a lot of casualy basketball fans went to that game after hearing about Austin Rivers going off.
I think if the ratings stay up around this we could be getting two challenges renewed instead of one.
I think if the ratings stay up around this we could be getting two challenges renewed instead of one.
It is isn't just a ratings issue. I think until the Tonya lawsuit is over and the insurance company reps go back into their cave and Viacom lawyers find something better to do, we are not likely to see more than a season at a time. That is just my gut instinct though.
Perhaps so... I watch Revenge "live" and TIVO the 11 pm challenge for next day viewing.
My wife and I follow the same pattern. We typically have two programs recording (Revenge and SVU) at 10:00, and we record the Challenge later in the evening.
I don't thin I have ever even heard or Revenge.
I don't thin I have ever even heard or Revenge.
Kind of shocked that you haven't. It's a major primetime show. It's still in the first season, but it is everywhere, including newsstands, internet, and even here on Vevmo. I'm going to assume most hardcore challenge fans have never heard of it.

The show had not much buzz and very mixed reviews before its start, so it was definitely a surprise hit for ABC with regards to ratings and reception. At least I would not be surprised, depending on the writer's cleverness in the future, if that would be the case.
Count me among the people who never watches/pays attention to any sort of billed-as-scripted comedies or dramas so I have no clue what Revenge is. I also never watch TV live except for baseball/football events (and even then I pause it for the first 30ish minutes so I can buffer out commercials) so my viewing habits aren't really useful for measuring purposes. I tend to record much more than I actually watch, just in case. That seems like it would be a big problem for estimating total viewership; it's too easy these days to just record everything that looks semi-interesting, then maybe watch it later.
Ah... ABC. That helps explain it. I have pretty much sworn off all broadcast television shows. I can't stand them anymore. I don't even give the new shows a look because for the last several years I have been underwhelmed with what they have to offer and there are other reasons. I have almost zero tolerance for those channels these days when it comes to shows.
It isn't just Revenge that came back. All 3 networks (except for which Fox has local news) weren't running new episodes last week while on Wednesday they all had new episodes.
As much as network TV bothers me I will have to do a little research on this Revenge show and see if it's too my taste. I have no faith in those networks but I don't want to let my bias cause me to miss out on a fantastic show.

He was the mind behind Ali McBeal and Boston Legal, two very tightly written shows.] I stand corrected. It is Mike Kelly... not David E. He's written for Swingtown (Jack Davenport), Jerico (Alicia Copola), The Beautiful Life (Mischa Barton) and he was also a writer on The O.C. but one that is my least favorite of his work.
